Three shootings in Gary leave one dead, two injured

Three shootings in Gary beginning late Thursday night and going into Friday morning left one man dead and two other people injured.
Bryan E. Cooke, 46, of the 1400 block of W. 19th Avenue, was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds after his unresponsive body was found in the 5000 block of Pennsylvania Street around 6:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s office.
A nearby resident discovered Cooke’s body when he went outside that morning, according to police. The coroner’s office has ruled Cooke’s death a homicide.

Cooke’s shooting followed two others, with the first one starting around 8:50 p.m. Thursday in the alley of 36th Avenue and Lincoln Street. Demetrius Reese, 32, told police he’d been shot but would not give any more information on what happened. It was not clear what Reese’s condition was.

The third shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. Thursday when Courtney Lewis, 32, was alerted by his alarm company that his home’s alarm had gone off.
Lewis reported that he noticed things were out of place when he got to the house, in the 3800 block of Tennessee Street, and that as he walked closer, he heard shots and felt a pain in his leg. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
