GARY — A Gary man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning as he opened bundles of newspapers to be delivered on the city’s west side.
Kovin Bell, 41, of the 500 block of Connecticut Street, was outside the Marathon gas station at 15th Avenue and Clark Road about 5:45 a.m. when a suspect, dressed in all black clothing, walked up and shot him in the stomach at close range. The shooter was seen running from the scene.
The closest Gary Fire Department ambulance with advanced life support equipment was in Miller, so a Prompt ambulance rushed the man to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus where he was pronounced dead at 6:07 a.m. of multiple gunshot wounds.
While collecting evidence, investigators found more than two dozen small packages of marijuana in Bell’s pants.
He is the 33rd homicide of the year in Gary and the second in four days.
Detective Cpl. Jeff Horynak is investigating the homicide. Anyone with information can call him at 881-1210.
