PORTAGE — The man found in a ditch along eastbound Interstate 94 on Tuesday was hit by a vehicle, according to preliminary findings from an autopsy.
The autopsy, performed Wednesday at the Lake County coroner’s office in Crown Point, determined that Ricky Kimble, 50, of LaPorte died of massive blunt force trauma consistent with being struck by a vehicle, Porter County Deputy Coroner Robert Byrd said.
A number of questions remain unanswered, he said, and Indiana State Police will handle the investigation.
Kimble’s body was found by workers mowing along the eastbound side of I-94 about a mile west of the Portage exit. Indiana State Police investigators said he could have been walking along the interstate.
Kimble was a 6-foot, 1-inch black man weighing about 258 pounds. He had a shaved haircut and was wearing brown shorts, a white tank top, tan boots and carried a black backpack.
Anyone with information regarding Kimble’s whereabouts between Saturday and Tuesday should call Detective Brian Kubiak at 696-6242 or LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Detective Ron Heeg at 326-7700, or the Porter County Coroner’s office at 548-0208.
