GARY — The Gary Fire Civil Service Commission has 16 complaints on file from firefighters who have been demoted or suspended without due process.
“The chief is doing this unilaterally,” Commission attorney Rinzer Williams III said after Thursday’s meeting.
The commission has authority to rule on violations committed by sworn members of the fire department after the administration submits the case to the board. The city enforces the recommended punishment.
But Chief Teresa Everett bypassed the system. “She’s just doing what she wants to do,” Williams said.
The first of the complaints is set for Aug. 27. Everett has been subpoenaed to testify.
In other business, the board discussed complaints it has received about the lack of promotions. The administration has not executed any promotions since the eligibility list was certified last year. Commissioner Randall Williams said the board can’t create a seniority list without knowing where people are assigned.
“We don’t even know how many we have in the department,” Williams said.
