HAMMOND — A Highland man was killed during a botched drug deal Monday afternoon in south Hammond.
Lakice Brooks, 17, sustained a gunshot wound to the head around 4:30 p.m. and he was pronounced dead nearly an hour later at Community Hospital in Munster.
Hammond Police Lt. RIchard Hoyda said the incident started around 4:30 p.m. in a parking lot adjacent to the Aldi and White Castle, located in the 7900 block of Indianapolis Boulevard. Two men were parked in a KIA vehicle when Brooks entered the back seat to purchase some marijuana. The men started fighting inside the car, then one man brandished a gun. Two shots were fired, with one hitting Brooks in the head and another hit a man in the front in the leg.
Brooks was pushed out of the car and left there, while the other men fled the scene.
Armed with a description of the car, police recovered the vehicle, with the two suspects inside, in the 800 block of May Street. The men were arrested and they are being held while charges are filed, likely Monday night.
Police have not released the names of the suspects.
