Lake County Sheriff’s Police arrested six men Wednesday during prostitution stings in the areas of 23rd and Broadway and 39th and Broadway in Gary.
The Lake County Children and Family Unit detectives and the Gang Unit performed the sting, according to a police statement released Friday.
An undercover female police officer posed as a prostitute during the operation. The undercover officer was approached by male subjects who allegedly propositioned her for services.
Six subjects were arrested for patronizing a prostitute: Richard Nalls, 53, of Michigan City; Kevin Williams, 29, of Gary; Erik Campbell, 41, of Merrillville; Jerod Heath, 18, of Gary; Errick Shelby, 27, of Gary; and Harrison Wellmaker, 52, of Gary.
Nalls, Williams, and Campbell were arrested additionally for obstruction of traffic because they approached the undercover officer while in their vehicles, according to police. The other three were on foot.
Charges are pending with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
“This sting is in response to citizen concerns of this unlawful activity in their neighborhood,” Sheriff John Buncich said. “We fielded anonymous calls to our Report a Crime hotline and responded accordingly. We will continue to address this issue in the weeks and months ahead.”
Buncich urged the community to call regarding any activities of the kind targeted Wednesday. Contact Detective Derrick Hurst at 755-3355 or the Report a Crime hotline at (800) 750-2746. All information will remain anonymous, the sheriff said.
