INDIANAPOLIS — New Census Bureau figures show the income of Indiana households trailed the national median by 9 percent last year.
The U.S. median household income for 2012 was just above $51,000. In Indiana, the median household income was about $46,700.
The Indianapolis Star reported Indiana’s median household incomes have been falling behind the national mark since 2000.
The Indiana Community Action Association said Indiana’s decline over that period was the fourth largest in the country.
Association policy analyst Derek Thomas called it a “lost decade for Hoosier families.” Thomas said Indiana needs to attract the right kind of jobs or the next decade is likely to continue that trend.
