GARY — A Midtown man arrested for disorderly conduct at the scene of Tuesday’s homicide remains in custody. Police said they will meet with prosecutors Thursday to seek murder charges.
Jerode Cursey, 22, of 1546 Delaware St., watched police process the crime scene from his house. The victim, DeWayne Young, 35, was shot to death as he sat behind the wheel of his car, which was parked at the northwest corner of 16th Avenue and Delaware Street, in front of Cursey’s home.
While investigators were still gathering evidence, Cursey stepped out of his house and argued with police when they told him he had to remain inside or step out of the taped-off crime scene. He continued to speak loudly until Cmdr. Sean Jones and Lt. Del Stout arrested him.
Later, witnesses told Sgt. Dan Callahan they saw Cursey fire into Young’s car about 9:30 a.m.
Callahan is expected to present his case to Lake County prosecutors Thursday morning. Young is the 40th homicide victim this year, compared to 30 by this time last year.
