A LaPorte man is in critical condition after he suffered a medical emergency Monday afternoon while driving on Interstate 94 near Portage.
Charles W. Morgan, 68, and his wife were heading home from a doctor’s appointment at the University of Chicago around 3:10 p.m. Just east of the Portage exit, he veered his 2012 Ford Fusion to the left and started to slow down. The car went off the road and hit the concrete median barrier wall twice before his wife was able to lean over and press the brake pedal to stop the car.
A witness to the crash — Tim Mark of Trail Creek, Ind. — pulled over to help. He realized Morgan was in distress and removed him from the car
Master troopers David Eggers and Tom Mechling were nearby — escorting a windmill blade — when the call came over the police radio. Once on the scene, they performed CPR until Portage EMS arrived to take over.
Morgan was in critical condition early Monday night at Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso.
