GARY — Relatives who went to Damian Reedus’ east side home after learning he was dead Monday morning discovered burglars had been there first.
The alarm system was activated about 12:30 p.m., alerting police to the break-in. Officers arrived and found a broken window.
Relatives reported a TV missing from the house at 2163 Vermont St., police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
Reedus, 34, was shot and killed before dawn Monday as he rode in his girlfriend’s minivan. Aja Jester, 33, was shot in the neck and flown to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., for surgery. She told police she saw the suspect, described as a friend of her boyfriend’s, fatally shoot Reedus.
She jumped from the van, and police later found Andre Woods, 34, shot to death and dumped on the side of the road about a mile from where Jester jumped out of the van. The homicides appear to be connected, police said, because Woods and Reedus knew each other. Both had lengthy criminal records.
Reedus was in Jester’s van, which had been left in the 1900 block of Pennsylvania Street. A resident on the block called police after seeing a “man down” in the van.
Investigators declined comment on anything else missing from Reedus’ home.
Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating the homicide.
