GARY — A 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the shoulder Friday morning with a gun belonging to his mother’s boyfriend, police said.
Jaquan Wilson found the gun under the couch at his family’s home in the 1900 block of Rhode Island Street.
His grandmother told police she heard a “pop” and then the boy complained that “it hurts, it hurts,” Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said. The boy’s grandmother saw a hole in his coat, then discovered the gunshot wound. She drove him to The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for treatment.
The gun owner had a permit for the weapon. He was not arrested, but was expected to be questioned later Friday.
Detective Cpl. Shauna Poirier-Peter is investigating the case. King said it is unknown if any charges will be filed.
