Authorities in Lake County on Friday were still investigating a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning that killed a woman and her infant son.
The crash was reported at 10:28 a.m. in the 6300 block of East 181st Avenue, just east of Interstate 65 in southern Lake County. It involved a tractor-trailer rig and a Chevrolet Trailblazer, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Killed were the driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Stacy Walstra, 29, of Hebron, and her one-month-old son, Jace Walstra, according to the release.
The infant died after being rushed to St. Anthony Hospital in Crown Point.
The semi driver, Viktor Loewen, 30, of Manitoba, Canada, was not injured.
The Trailblazer was westbound on 181st when, due to icy conditions, it slid into the eastbound lanes, into the path of the semi. It is believed that the semi had no chance to avoid the collision.
“At this time, Mr. Loewen has been cooperative with the investigation and there is no indication of impairment” on his part, according to the news release.
