Five people were shot — including the 23-year-old suspected gunman — at a senior citizen social club in Gary on Wednesday night.
As Gary Police officers attempted to get past the locked door of the Safe and Sound Senior social club, patrons inside screamed: “Help us! He’s reloading!”
Five people in the club — including the 23-year-old suspected gunman — were shot late Wednesday after a man entered the club, 2220 Broadway, and told patrons to get on the ground, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said. Witnesses said the gunman then opened fire and shot four men, King said.
When police responded about 11:30 p.m., they found the front door locked, and an officer used his shotgun to shatter the lock. They found the injured suspect, of Chicago, hiding in a bathroom at the rear of the club, police said. It was unclear who shot him, King said.
The suspect was treated and released into police custody.
Two of the injured club patrons are Gary residents, 65 and 76, King said, and 43-year-old man from East Chicago and a 45-year-old man from Chicago were also shot. None of the patrons’ injuries were life threatening, police said.
