Jury deadlocks in child molesting case

Updated: February 14, 2014 8:43PM

A Lake Superior Court jury deliberated about eight hours before indicating they were hopelessly deadlocked Thursday in the child molesting trial of a Gary man.

Deliberations began Wednesday afternoon and continued Thursday morning in the case of Kenneth Ray Barnett, 48, who has pleaded not guilty to two counts of child molesting involving a girl who was about 10 years old.

Barnett was charged in October 2012 with engaging in deviate sexual conduct and fondling the girl in Hobart. A similar case is pending against Barnett in Louisiana.

Judge Diane Ross Boswell declared a mistrial and scheduled a new jury trial for June 9.
