EAST CHICAGO — Police are looking for witnesses into the overnight shooting homicide of a 16-year-old boy.

“We have no suspects at this time. We are still trying to ascertain what happened in fuller detail,” said Detective Supervisor Juan Beltran.

Beltran said police responded to a call at about 1:30 a.m. Monday regarding a suspicious circumstance. When they arrived at the scene just east of the intersection of Indianapolis Boulevard and Riley Road they discovered a vehicle lodged in the embankment and a person lying on the ground away from the vehicle with gunshot wounds.

Jeremiah Rivera, of the 3500 block of Fir Street, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County Coroner’s office, which was called to the crime scene at 1:55 a.m. Rivera was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m. East Chicago Police and the Lake County Sheriff’s crime scene investigators are investigating the homicide.

Beltran said it is believed Rivera was behind the wheel of the vehicle. It is possible there were other passengers in the vehicle, who may have fled before police arrived at the scene, but police are not sure.

He said it is too early to ascertain if the shooting is gang-related.

“We are really seeking help from the community,” Beltran said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact lead Detective Maurice Phillips or Beltran at (219) 391-8318.
