LAKE STATION — City police officers are credited with pulling a man from a burning house early Thursday.
Cpl. Mike McKenzie of the Lake Station Police Department was traveling in the 2700 block of Central Avenue about 12:18 a.m. when he saw smoke coming from a residential area, according to a news release from Chief of Police Kevin Garber Sr. When he saw smoke coming from under a roof overhang at 2701 Central Ave., McKenzie radioed dispatch requesting fire personnel and further assistance.
Off-duty Sgt. Jimmy Lamprecht arrived on the scene and approached the residence with McKenzie, the release said. Both officers checked the east door and saw that it was blackened and appeared to be melting. Officers also observed windows melting on the residence.
Cpl. Christopher Purser, Officer Andres Verduzco, and off-duty Officer Grant Crizer arrived on the scene to assist. Using a pry bar, Purser and Verduzco forced open a locked gate at the rear of the residence, Garber said. Lamprecht and McKenzie forced open a door on the east side of the residence while Purser, Verduzco and Crizer started to force open the south rear door.
Officers at the rear door found someone lying on the floor and blocking the door, according to the release. Officers entered the residence and pulled an 83-year-old man from the residence. He was carried to an ambulance where he was treated by Lake Station Ambulance personal. Lamprecht assisted EMS workers by driving the ambulance to the hospital as medics continue treating the man, according to Garber.
The victim was admitted to the hospital and was still being treated Thursday night. A report on his condition was not immediately available.
Firefighters from Station 1 and Station 2 responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire was still under investigation. Investigators from the Lake Station Fire Department, Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and detectives from the Lake Station Police Department are conducting the investigation.
