A Merrillville woman facing attempted murder charges is accused of beating her husband with a lamp, gun and a candy dish.
Melinda D. Griggs, 57, was arrested Saturday afternoon at her apartment in the 7200 block of McKinley Circle. She was charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony; battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Class C felony; and two counts of pointing a firearm, a Class D felony.
Merrillville Police were dispatched to a domestic disturbance report involving lots of blood and firearms at 4:47 p.m. An officer spotted Griggs in the hallway of the apartment building with blood on her hands and shirt. Asked if she was hurt, she said: “No, this is his blood.”
She told police her husband pulled a gun on her and she struck him with a lamp. “I should have just killed him so you guys could come get his body out of here,” she said, according to police.
Officers found Griggs’ husband sitting on a bed. His face was covered in blood and he had a large cut on his left hand. Blood was on the floor, leather couch and walls, and several live rounds of ammunition were scattered across the floor.
One officer found a Taurus .45-caliber lever-action rifle under the bed; it was unloaded and covered in blood. A .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol was discovered under the couch in the living room; it was loaded and appeared to have pieces of human flesh on the weapon’s slide.
Griggs’ husband was treated for cuts on his face and hands and bruising and swelling all over his body, but he refused to be taken to a hospital.
He told police the altercation started about her excessive drinking. She became enraged and hit him in the head with a lamp. He said Griggs grabbed the rifle and pointed it at him, saying “You deserve to die.” He grabbed the gun, and they struggled, but he managed to unload it. When Griggs realized it was unloaded, he said, she grabbed a pistol and started striking him in the face with it, and smashed a glass candy dish over his head.
He said Griggs just kept screaming “I’m going to kill you.”
Police found Griggs also used pieces of broken glass to cut him on his left hand.
