GARY — Friends and family gathered Monday night to commemorate the violent deaths of two brothers, only to have the event marred by more violence, the shooting death of a 20-year-old man.
James Anderson, 20, of Gary, died about 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus emergency room, authorities said.
Karl Smith, 30, of Gary, surrendered to police Tuesday after being identified by multiple witnesses as the shooter and is expected to be charged Wednesday, police Lt. Jack Arnold said.
On the first anniversary of the shooting deaths of Charles Wood, 18, and Shaqwone Ham, 19, who were killed near Tolleston Park, family and friends gathered to remember them, police said.
They said Anderson was among those at his girlfriend’s Miller Village apartment when he and Smith began to argue, and Smith shot Anderson and fled.
Police said they processed two scenes related to the case — one at the apartment, 920 N. County Line Road, and the other at a nearby house in the 400 block of South Hamilton Street in Gary, where police responded to an unconfirmed report of shots fired and found several witnesses who had been present minutes earlier at the apartment.
Anderson is Gary’s fifth homicide victim of the year. The death of an unidentified man found dead March 1 in a burning sport utility vehicle was recently ruled a homicide after an autopsy revealed that he was stabbed several times, police said.
