Charges in diamond ring theft last fall

A Michigan City man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with stealing a $21,000 diamond ring from a store in Southlake Mall, using an juvenile accomplice.

Shawn M. Sobolewski, 34, of the 700 block of Dewey Street, is charged with theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the Sept. 9 theft of a diamond ring from Albert’s Jewelers at the mall in Hobart.

An employee told police an older man and a younger man came into the store and then left, with the younger one returning a short time later, saying he was looking for an engagement ring for his girlfriend.

He asked to see a specific ring and suddenly ran from the store, getting into a sport utility vehicle and being driven away by Sobolewski, police said.

Their investigation led to the teen, who admitted stealing the ring in a plan discussed a couple of days earlier with Sobolewski, according to police. They said Sobolewski and the teen drove in Sobolewski’s SUV toward Michigan City, and Sobolewski made a phone call and set up a meeting point halfway to sell the ring to an unidentified man for $600.

Witnesses identified the teen as the person who ran off with the ring. Cellphone records obtained by LaPorte County sheriff’s police in a separate investigation showed that Sobolewski’s phone traffic put him near the robbery scene and later in Chesterton and Michigan City, Hobart police Det. Stephen Houck said in court records.
