GARY—The drivers involved in a two-car crash in Gary are dead after one of the cars burst into flames Thursday morning, police said.
One of the drivers has been identified as Jarrell Connell, 21, a resident of the Willows apartment complex, just blocks from the scene of the deadly crash. The other driver, also a man, has not been identified. Both died from blunt force trauma, a news release from the Lake County coroner states.
Investigators remained at the scene of a double-fatal, head-on crash hours after it occurred about 5 a.m., Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
An SUV and a passenger car collided head-on with such force that both erupted into flames, rolling one the vehicles and sending the other spinning on 5th Avenue near Colfax Street in Brunswick. The road was closed from Calhoun Street on the west to Burr Street while Lake County deputy coroners and the Indiana State Fire Marshal, along with Gary police, investigate the scene. Traffic was moving through the area by 9 a.m.
Both drivers were trapped inside their cars, King said. Police didn’t know until more than two hours after the crash if other passengers were riding in either car.
Fifth Avenue where the crash occurred is a four-lane road and a major thoroughfare to Hammond and East Chicago.
Investigators have not released any information on what led to the crash.
