GARY — A man found critically wounded in the road at 4th Avenue and Harrison Street on Thursday night died minutes later at the emergency room.
The victim, Virgil Bailey, 36, was rushed to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus about 9:15 p.m. He was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m., a news release from the Lake County Coroner states.
Bailey, who lived just blocks from the site where police found him on the street, told family members he was walking to the store and left his home shortly after 9 p.m.
Investigators say they don’t believe Bailey was robbed and decline to speculate on any motive for the slaying.
Police and medics were called to the scene where Bailey had collapsed on the street. He had been shot in the chest.
Anyone with information about the shooting can call Detectives Cpl. Edward Gonzales at 881-4750, James Bond at 881-4751 or Daryl Gordon at 881-7545.
“Anyone with information that would held us in this investigation would be appreciated,” Gonzalez said Friday.
Bailey is the sixth homicide victim of the year and the third in March.
