Police: Man kills  wife, then turns gun on himself

Updated: May 1, 2014 7:38AM

Hammond Police believe 37-year-old Renata Marquez was shot to death by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself, at their home in the Robertsdale section of Hammond late Saturday night.

Marquez suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Marquez’s 38-year-old husband, who has not been identified, is in critical condition at a local trauma hospital, according to Hammond Police Lt. Richard Hoyda.

Hoyda said police were called to the home in the 2000 block of Lincoln Avenue around 11:48 p.m. He said Marquez’s mother, who lived in a first-floor apartment in the house, heard the couple shouting, tried calling the husband, but received no answer. She entered the couple’s second floor residence and found her daughter had been shot. She also removed the couple’s 4-year-old child from the scene, he said.

Crown Point resident Lisette Guillen was shocked when she received the news of her childhood friend’s death Sunday morning.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Guillen said. “I don’t know what to say except, ‘Oh, my goodness, oh, my goodness.’ ”

Guillen and Marquez played together as kids because their mothers were best friends, she said, and the tradition continued as adults.

Marquez worked nights in a manufacturing job, Guillen said, and her mother would watch her kids while she worked. Marquez had four children ranging in age from 4 years old to early 20s.

“Renata lived upstairs from her mom, and they were extremely close,” Guillen said.

Friends and family called Marquez by the affectionate nickname “Wera,” Guillen said.

“She is loved by so many people, and she is going to be terribly missed,” Guillen said.
