GARY — A charred body found early Wednesday inside a vacant Midtown apartment building had been shot several times before being set on fire, Lake County coroner officials said.

The victim has not been identified, but Deputy Coroner George Deliopoulos said the body is that of a black man, age unknown, who was about 5 feet 9 inches tall. He said the victim has “noticeably” large hands for a man his height, is missing several teeth and apparently had his gall bladder removed.

Deliopoulos said anyone who might know the man’s identity is asked to call 755-3265.

The body was discovered in a first-floor doorway of a long-vacant apartment building, 1833 Pennsylvania St., after firefighters extinguished a blaze there about 12:15 a.m.

Police Lt. Jack Arnold, supervisor of the Violent Crimes Unit, is leading the investigation and can be reached at 881-7439.

The man is the seventh homicide of the year in the city.
