Valparaiso eyes online utility billing fee schedule

Updated: May 22, 2014 6:03AM

VALPARAISO — Residents may be able to pay their water and sewer bill online if the Utility Board can agree on a fee structure.

Costs would be 45 cents per online transaction plus processing fees of $2.28 per credit or debit card if the city pays and $2.95 if the customers pay. E-check payments would have a $1 processing fee for either.

The Customer Service and Billing department’s Mary Woodworth suggested last week that the city cover the 45-cent cost and customers should cover other costs.

The fee structure came from Infosend, which has been sending out utility bills since the beginning of the year. The city currently pays 19 cents per bill for printing and 48 cents postage, she said.

A quarter of the 12,640 utility customers now use automatic debit.

Offering an online payment method might also cut down on the calls the customer service department gets on due dates and water shut off dates, and the service would also allow them to take credit card, debit card and e-check payments in the office, Woodworth said.

The board will review the matter and possibly vote at its April 22 meeting.
