CHESTERTON — A poorly secured modular house fell off a semi truck onto a ramp and two westbound lanes of Interstate 80/94 Tuesday morning, causing a major traffic jam, Indiana State police said.

The house, about 16 feet wide and 76 feet long, also blocked two lanes on the northbound ramp of Indiana 49 to I-80/94, according to Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley.

Dietchley said traffic was restricted to the single open lane on I-80/94. All westbound lanes were reopened in the late afternoon.

State police spokeswoman Sgt. Ann Wojas said the truck lost its load about 10:15 a.m., when the 20-ton mobile home shifted while on a curve on the ramp.

“As the semi was coming around the curve of northbound (Indiana) 49 to I-94 westbound, the home shifted causing the bolts to break and come out. This caused the mobile home to fall off, blocking the ramp and roadway,” Wojas said in a news release.

She said the house was being transported from Topeka, Ind., to Sioux City, Iowa, accompanied by two other vehicles. The house sustained several thousand dollars in damage, Wojas said.

The driver, Tracy L. Blocher, 41, of Pierceton, Ind., was not injured and was ticketed for inadequate securement and inoperative trailer brakes, according to the news release.
