HOBART — Two men were hospitalized Friday in critical condition with gunshot wounds after a police-involved shooting Thursday night, according to police.

They said an officer responded to hearing shots fired about 11:30 p.m. and saw shooting between the occupants of two vehicles outside a motel in the 1600 block of East 62nd Avenue.

One of the men was shot in his vehicle, while the other car drove off the road into a field, where the driver got out and started walking along railroad tracks, police said.

As officers pursued him on foot, the man fired at them and they returned fire, hitting the man, according to police.

Lake County sheriff’s police are investigating but would not release further details on Friday.
