GARY — A Gary man ran twice from Lake County police and was bitten Thursday by a K-9 officer after police tried to arrest him on four outstanding warrants, spokeswoman Patti VanTil said.

David Serrano, 45, of 2388 Hobart St., ignored police orders to stop running when they saw him at the back of the house, VanTil said.

When he continued to flee, Patrolman Bryan Zabrecky released his K-9 partner, Zahr, who forced Serrano to the ground, she said. Serrano got up and resumed running until Zahr bit Serrano in the back of his thigh, she said.

Serrano was taken to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for treatment of the bite before he was booked at the Lake County Jail, VanTil said.

He is being held on four warrants and new charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia. Police found Serrano had a crack pipe when he was apprehended.
