Police  investigate report about trail knifing

Updated: June 11, 2014 6:10AM

PORTAGE — Portage Police are investigating a knife attack that reportedly occurred shortly before 11 a.m. or noon Thursday on the Prairie Duneland Trail.

Chief Troy Williams issued a public safety announcement Friday via Facebook, but Keith Hughes, the department’s public information officer, said it has not yet been confirmed that the attack took place.

Officers are waiting to speak with the 20-year-old supposed victim when he gets off work Friday. He did not need medical attention, Hughes said.

In his post, Williams said the male victim was reported to have been attacked on a part of the trail near the Lake County Line and Camelot Mobile Home Park, and he received superficial cuts. The attacker was described as a black man, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, in his late 20s, with a faded-style haircut.

Williams said the department patrols the trails at varying times, and that he does not believe the Portage case is related to an incident reported recently in the Hobart/Gary portion of the trail.
