HAMMOND--An East Chicago man was shot to death on a Hammond street early Tuesday, police said.

Kelvin Campbell, 26, of the 3900 block of Catalpa Street, was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. in the 3600 block of Orchard Drive, a news release from the Lake County coroner states.

Campbell was sitting alone in his red Chrysler shortly after midnight when he was shot by someone outside the car, Hammond Lt. Richard Hoyda said. He said investigators don’t know how many suspects were involved or if they were in standing or in another car.

No one is in custody, he added.

Campbell was one of four people charged with attempted murder after a man was shot in the head on the Borman Expressway Jan. 28, 2012. Charges were dismissed a year later when the victim refused to cooperate with police and prosecutors.

Hoyda said anyone with information about the homicide can call the detective bureau at (219) 852-2906.
