BURNS HARBOR — Firefighters don’t know why a 2015 Kia Sorento caught fire Wednesday night inside the service garage of Arnell Kia, at 241 Melton Road.

In addition to destroying the SUV, which had been brought to the shop for a rust coat and paint shield treatment, three other vehicles in the garage sustained heat and smoke damage, said Chief William Arney, of the Burns Harbor Fire Department. The flames also spread to the building, causing smoke and fire damage to the garage. There also was minor smoke damage to the attached showroom.

When the first fire engine arrived, “We had heavy smoke and fire coming out of the service garage,” Arney said.

His early estimate of the damage is in excess of $200,000. Nine fire departments responded to the two-alarm fire, which set off an alarm at 11:17 p.m.

Arney said the fire was out by 12:15 a.m. Thursday, with crews clearing the scene by 1:17 a.m.
