The 62-year-old member of the Lake County Pipes and Drums Unit who collapsed during a parade in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday is in critical condition but expected to recover, thanks to the quick response of emergency personnel who were nearby when it happened, Lake County police spokeswoman Patti VanTil said Thursday.
Lito Lemus of Schererville, who has been a member of the Lake County unit for three years, underwent emergency surgery Wednesday night, she said.
The Lake County Pipes and Drums team was leading the parade at the annual National Law Enforcement Memorial services when Lemus suffered an apparent heart attack. First responders in the area administered CPR until an ambulance arrived, VanTil said.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich praised the emergency personnel, saying, “It was a good cooperative effort in assisting Mr. Lemus at the scene. There were many individuals present with emergency training who quickly responded. Consequently, the outcome appears to be positive.”
Lemus is a former captain at a municipal fire department in Illinois, Van Til said.
