Murder charges have been filed against a Gary man in connection with a double homicide in January 2008 at a Merrillville apartment.
Kenneth C. Sandidge, 55, is charged in Lake Superior Court with killing Michelle Covington, 47, of Merrillville, and her cousin, Vincent Curry, 44, of Gary. Covington was shot in the head at close range, and Curry was shot twice, including once in the head, prosecutors said.
Sandidge is now serving a four-year sentence at the state prison in Westville on a conviction for carrying a handgun without a license.
The victims were found Jan. 2, 2008, at an apartment in the 5800 block of Grant Street, where police found no sign of forced entry or a struggle but indications that they had been playing cards when they were shot.
Indiana State Police lab scientists obtained a DNA profile from two cigarette butts in the apartment and got a hit in the national DNA database, matching the DNA evidence to Sandidge, according to prosecutors.
Witnesses told police that Sandidge was dating Covington at the time of the killings and that he had later bragged about killing a man and woman in Merrillville because they had cheated him over some drugs.
Another witness who dated Sandidge after the double murder said he would threaten to kill her when he became angry and once told her that he had “killed two people before,” according to court records.
