LAKE STATION – No one was seriously injured in an accident Saturday evening involving a Lake Station Police officer responding to a call.

An Indiana State Police press release said Officer Ryan Haas, 35, was driving a fully marked Chevy Tahoe with its lights and sirens on northbound on Ripley Street when he made a left turn on to Old Hobart Road. In making the turn, Haas failed to see a 1999 Ford Mustang driving southbound on Ripley, police said.

A semitrailer that was also heading southbound on Ripley was in the left turn lane, and the truck blocked Haas’ sight line as well as the Mustang, police said. As Haas turned left, he hit the Mustang’s driver front.

Haas, as well as the driver of the Mustang, Paulette Reed, 44, of Lake Station, and her two children, were taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Everyone involved was wearing their seatbelts.

The Lake Station Police Department contacted the state police to conduct the investigation. Investigators closed the intersection of Ripley and Old Hobart Road, and one lane north and south bound on Ripley Street.
