GARY — A Gary police officer wounded a suspected burglar during a foot pursuit Tuesday afternoon in the Glen Park area, according to police.
They said officers were responding about
2 p.m. to reports of a home burglary in the 600 block of West 45th Avenue when they were flagged down by a resident who said a man had climbed out of a window of the house with a bicycle.
Police quickly spotted the man, who dropped the bike and fled on foot when he saw officers, who caught him in an alley east of Harrison Street after chasing him a few blocks, police said.
The man was told to raise his hands, but he reached into his waist band and was shot in the leg by Patrolman Andrew Cuevas, who was off duty and lives in the area and had joined the pursuit, according to police.
Kevin Russell, 29, of Gary, was taken to Methodist Hospitals Southlake for treatment and faces charges of burglary, fleeing police and resisting police, Police Chief Wade Ingram said, adding that the shooting appeared to be justified “based on preliminary information.”
