INDIANAPOLIS — Andrean’s senior pitching tandem of Matt DeSomer and Jimmy Skiff put together one more dominant outing this season, this one leading the 59ers to a state championship.

But not without some nervous moments for Andrean coach Dave Pishkur, although those mainly came before the game started.

DeSomer and Skiff combined to allow just five hits in Andrean’s 6-0 win over Gibson Southern in the IHSAA Class 3A state championship game at Victory Field on Saturday. The 59ers won the program’s fourth Class 3A baseball state championship, and the first since the 2010 season. Andrean also won the Class 3A football state championship last fall.

“They both feel great because they’re both victories that bring home state championships,” said DeSomer, who was the starting quarterback for the undefeated 59ers football team.

After warming up prior to starting the game, DeSomer came into the dugout and put his head down between his legs. He felt like he could vomit and had butterflies.

“That’s not usually a good sign,” Pishkur said. “(DeSomer) looked like he went 10 rounds with Muhammad Ali and I wondered if this guy was going to get through the first inning for us.”

Skiff warmed up in the first inning just as a precaution, but he wasn’t needed until later. DeSomer struck out 10 batters and allowed just four hits in 5⅔ innings.

“Matt is just overpowering with his fastball,” Pishkur said. “He had some pop.”

Andrean never found much offensive rhythm against Gibson Southern starting pitcher Dillon Whitten, who struck out nine in a complete game. The 59ers took a 3-0 lead after scoring a run each in the first, fourth and fifth innings.

But the game turned lopsided in the seventh inning when Nick Podkul hit a two-run triple past diving Gibson Southern right fielder Mason Mockobee. Podkul scored on a throwing error on the play, putting the 59ers ahead 6-0.

“That was the final straw and I didn’t think they were going to come back from six down,” Pishkur said.

The three-run scoring play came moments after the 59ers shut down one of Gibson Southern’s best scoring opportunities. In the sixth inning, DeSomer struck out the leadoff hitter before Whitten hit his second double of the game. A wild pitch and walk put runners at first and third with one out, which ended DeSomer’s night on the mound.

Andrean went to its other undefeated pitcher, Skiff, who needed just two pitches to induce a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

“It’s different coming in with runners on instead of starting with the bases empty, because when you start, you sort of choose your own fate,” Skiff said. “The situation panned out for me and I just had to get the groundball and let my defense make the great play.”

Andrean took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Podkul’s RBI groundout. That scored Donovan Chandler, who moved from first to third on a walk when Gibson Southern catcher Caleb Wagner threw the ball past second base into the outfield on the fourth ball.

The 59ers had runners at first and third with nobody out when Kevin McCune hit into a double play in the fourth inning, but that scored DeSomer to put them ahead 2-0.

Andrean went ahead 3-0 when DeSomer’s hard grounder went between the legs of Gibson Southern third baseman Reed Farmer, allowing Chandler to score from second base on the fielding error.
