HAMMOND — A motorcyclist died after a head-on crash with an SUV on Monday.

Rogelio Guerrero, 24, was involved in a motorcycle crash about 1:20 p.m. Monday in the 5200 block of Columbia Avenue, according to police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

A 50-year-old man was driving an SUV northbound in the 5200 block of Columbia and attempted a left turn when he thought traffic was clear, according to Hammond police.

He then saw a motorcycle come from behind another vehicle and change lanes “at a high rate of speed,” Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda said. The driver of the SUV tried to stop, but struck the motorcycle head-on, police said.

Guerrero, of the 4700 block of Ash Avenue in Hammond, suffered blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at 3:10 p.m. at Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, according to the coroner’s office.

The driver of the SUV was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to police.

Hoyda said the speed of the motorcycle remains under investigation.
