GARY — When police arrived in the alley behind 1630 W. 5th Ave. early Thursday, they found two shooting victims and little else.

The young men were both dead, and there was little evidence there to tell police what happened.

Investigative Cmdr. Jon Cooros said the crowd that usually materializes at crime scenes didn’t appear Thursday, leaving detectives with few people to question at the scene.

He said police don’t yet know if the two men shot each other or if additional people are involved.

Darrion Estes, 23, and Daven James, 17, both of Gary, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Police responded to reports of gunfire about 1:30 a.m., then reports of a shooting victim. When Patrolman Phillip Komisarcik arrived in the alley, he found two victims.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene, which was behind a three-story brick apartment building on the northeast corner of 5th Avenue and Hayes Street.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson lives less than a block from the scene.

About an hour before the shooting, police had responded to a disturbance in the small park across the street from where the two young men were killed. Police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said there had been “some type of gathering” before the gunfire, but no additional details were available.

Cooros said Thursday afternoon he had no information linking the park incident to the homicides.

Anyone with information can call Detective James Nielsen at (219) 881-4754 or Detective Daryl Gordon at (219) 881-4750.
