The son of an 80-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in her hospital room has been charged with murder, according to a published report.
Rodney Louis Dickinson, 60, was charged Saturday in connection with the slaying Friday of Margrine Haywood, a patient at Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus in Merrillville, the Associated Press said, citing a published report.
Haywood’s husband, James Haywood, 88, was found stabbed to death in his Gary home a few hours after her stabbing. No charges had been filed in connection with his death.
An affidavit said a witness told police she saw Dickinson acting strangely in his mother’s hospital room, then heard screams and saw Dickinson running away. It says that before losing consciousness, Margrine Haywood identified Dickinson to a nurse.
Police had said Friday after arresting a suspect in the 3800 block of Carolina Street in Gary that he was “familiar” with the victims. At that time, police did not reveal the relationship between the suspect and the victims.
Police responded about 12:25 a.m. Friday at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus, 8701 Broadway in Merrillville, authorities said. The hospital was locked down for nearly six hours while police investigated.
During the investigation, police went to the woman’s home in the 1500 block of Hovey Street in Gary and found James Haywood dead, said Gary Chief of Police Wade Ingram. Ingram described the man’s death as a homicide.
The Lake County coroner’s office said both died of multiple stab wounds.
Margrine Haywood, who neighbors said had been in poor health for a while, was taken to the hospital July 4.
