GARY — Seven teenage boys, all from Gary and self-proclaimed members of a street gang, were arrested after one of them posted a video on Facebook showing the beating of another teen, police said.
Suspects range in age from 11 to 17 years old and are all residents of Delaney Community Housing Development, police said.
The victim, who is 15 years old and also from Gary, was seen being struck, knocked down and kicked while his assailants laughed at him. The gang members surrounded the victim, who is seen attempting to evade them by waving his arms and walking away. The attackers grabbed for his cellphone but later took only his skateboard, police said.
The incident occurred on July 1 at the shuttered Beckman Middle School on 23rd Avenue east of Grant Street near Delaney. Although the school is boarded up, the victim and others had found access to the interior. The victim was skateboarding at the building when the assault occurred, police said.
“Delaney Boy Nuffsaid” posted a video recording on his Facebook page a short time after the incident. The video has since been removed.
Cpl. Jeff Tatum and auxiliary officer Montae Dixon identified suspects from the video and arrested them over several days since July 1. The oldest suspects are expected to be waived to adult court on charges of robbery and battery, police said.
The others were all processed and taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police said the victim is recovering from injuries suffered during the attack.
Sgt. Darlene Breitenstein and Detective Simon Lillie are handling the investigation.
