A former Highland Middle School teacher facing charges of sexual misconduct with a minor, child molesting, criminal confinement, child solicitation and attempted child solicitation is scheduled to stand trial starting Feb. 16.

Samuel J. Fies, 35, of St. John, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which involve three girls.

One of the girls told police she was 15 and speaking with a woman coach in the athletic office when Fies asked the coach to leave, locked the door to the office and had inappropriate contact with the girl.

The child molesting charge alleges that Fies molested a girl who was younger than 14 between May 2009 and May 2010.

The other charges allege sexual acts and confinement in May 2010 to October 2011 when Fies was a classroom teacher and track and cross-country coach at Highland Middle School or Highland High School.

Lake Superior Court Judge Samuel Cappas set the trial at the request of deputy prosecutor Michael Woods, who said during a hearing Friday that the plea agreement offered to Fies was withdrawn. Defense attorney Stephen Scheele said several depositions must be taken before the case can be resolved.

Fies was terminated from the school system Nov. 23, 2011.
