GARY — A 54-year-old Gary man was killed late Friday when he was struck by multiple vehicles as he apparently tried to walk across Interstate 80/94 just east of the Clark Street overpass.
Charles Maguire, of the 3000 block of Ralston Street, suffered blunt force trauma injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Indiana State Police.
A news release from the state police said a 48-year-old woman from Northville, Michigan, was driving east on I-80/94 in the left middle lane when a passenger in her car yelled there was someone walking out into their lane.
The woman tried to stop but was unable to avoid hitting Maguire. She immediately pulled her vehicle over to the outer shoulder. Maguire landed in the left lane where he was run over by multiple unknown vehicles.
Police said it appears Maguire was walking north to south across the eastbound lanes of the interstate before he was struck.
All lanes of eastbound traffic were closed for crash reconstruction and removal of the body. Vehicles were diverted off at Burr Street until about 3:15 a.m. when the highway was reopened.
