Updated: August 25, 2014 5:38PM

A Schererville woman was killed early Wednesday when a tire struck the windshield of her car on the Bishop Ford Freeway in Chicago.

A green 1997 Chevrolet Blazer was southbound on Interstate 94 near 130th Street when its tire came off about 6:10 a.m., according to Illinois State Police.

The tire bounced into the northbound lanes and struck a white 2011 Nissan Versa, state police said.

The driver of the Nissan, Jovanka Mijatov, 64, of Schererville, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to state police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Marina Blanco, 48, of Hammond, was not injured, but was charged with no valid insurance, no valid registration and use of unsafe tires, state police said.

All northbound lanes were reopened about 9:15 a.m., according to state police.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the fatality.
