Teen killed by train in Griffith

Updated: August 30, 2014 6:32AM

GRIFFITH — An 18-year-old youth was struck and killed by a freight train Monday evening near 45th Avenue and Elmer Street, according to police.

Police Chief Greg Mance said police got a call about 5 p.m. that a young man’s body was found just south of the railroad crossing on 45th Avenue. CN Railway police were called in and are investigating the incident, which appears to be a suicide, authorities said. The teen’s identity was being withheld by both Griffith and CN police late Monday night.

A woman who was at the Automatic Washboard Coin-Op Laundry at the time of the incident said she knew the youth for several years, since eighth grade at Griffith Middle School. They lived in the same neighborhood and were friendly but didn’t hang out with each other, she said.

“I knew there were issues, and I knew he was getting help,” said the woman, who declined to be identified.

A man who was also at the laundry said he was reading something in his truck when he looked south on the tracks and saw two men standing over the body.

“There were two trains, one going north and one south, and neither blew their horns,” said the man, who didn’t want his name used.
