SCHERERVILLE — No more trips to Orland Park, Illinois: Work on the region’s first Whole Foods Market is underway.

Construction began Thursday on the organic grocery chain’s store at the Shops on Main center, U.S. 41 and Main Street in Schererville.

The Schererville Whole Foods is scheduled to open in fall 2015.

“We have received many requests to locate a store in this area and our team members are looking forward to opening another store in the great state of Indiana,” Michael Bashaw, Midwest regional president of Whole Foods, said in a news release. “We have customers in the community who are driving long distances to shop at our stores and are happy to now be able to offer them the convenience of having a local store of their own.”

The closest Whole Foods in Indiana is in Mishawaka, about an hour and a half from Schererville.

Other stores at the Shops on Main, developed by Boyer Properties and Regency Centers operated by Regency Centers Corp., include Homegoods, Gordon’s and DSW shoes.

Whole Foods, Boyer and Regency also donated $5,000 to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to begin giving back to the community they are joining.
