Cops: Fatal shooting in East Chicago may have been retaliatory

Updated: September 5, 2014 6:24AM

An East Chicago man was shot to death early Sunday morning in what police say was possibly a retaliatory attack.

East Chicago police discovered Gary Walton, 28, had been shot several times in his back and legs in the 3800 block of Heron Court after they responded to a call for shots fired about 4:15 a.m., according to police.

Walton, of the same block, was conscious at the time and was able to answer questions from police. However, he died shortly afterward at St. Catherine’s Hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:38 a.m. The Lake County Coroner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was in retaliation, although a release did not say in regards to what. Anyone with information is asked to call 391-8400 or an anonymous tip line at 391-8500.
