Charges of aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery by means of a deadly weapon have been filed against a Hebron-area man in a stabbing last month.

Peter James Verboon, 28, is charged with attacking his stepbrother, Bradley Vanvleet, from behind when Vanvleet came to pick up his son from Verboon’s girlfriend’s mobile home in the 600 block of Orchard Avenue near Hebron. The woman was babysitting Vanvleet’s son on July 31. Vanvleet told police he had his back to the living room as he talked with the woman when he was attacked from behind and fell to the floor. Verboon began arguing with the woman, then left.

Vanvleet noticed blood everywhere. He took his son and went home, but was in extreme pain and couldn’t catch his breath. He went to Franciscan St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point and discovered he had been stabbed five times in the back and right shoulder area and had a collapsed lung. Vanvleet was hospitalized for five days.

The most serious of the charges is a Level 3 felony, which is punishable by three to 16 years.
