A Whiting man has been charged in Lake Superior Court in a crash Sunday in that seriously injured another driver.
Dylan Reeves, 18, of the 1200 block of West Fred Street, was charged with three felonies – operating while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness and failure to stop after an accident resulting in injury – and eight misdemeanors related to reckless driving, failure of duty and drunken driving.
Police were called at about 7 p.m. to the 11000 block of Wicker Avenue in Cedar Lake, where they found a maroon Buick Regal with extensive front end damage off the roadway on a hill. The car had struck a mailbox post and had driven through landscaping in the area. Police learned that the car had crashed into another vehicle at West 165th Avenue and Wicker Avenue in Lowell and had been followed by several civilian witnesses who caught Reeves and turned him over to arriving officers.
Witnesses told police that Reeves had been traveling north on Wicker Avenue when he crossed the center line between the two northbound lanes and struck a 2004 Ford Escape driven by Wiestaw Szmuc, whose car launched off the road, rolled into a ditch, crashed into a phone box, rolled through a fence and landed on its side. Szmuc was pinned inside the car and was extricated by Lake Dalecarlia firefighters.
Szmuc was airlifted to Christ Hospital in Illinois for treatment.
Witnesses told police after the Regal crashed into the other car, Reeves drove in and out of traffic aggressively and at a high rate of speed.
