GARY — A Glen Park man was shot to death late Monday just south of Ivy Tech Community College.
Gerald Mathews, 37, was in the street near 36th Avenue and Louisiana Street shortly before 11 p.m. when he was shot several times, police said.
Mathews ran into a yard on the south side of the street where he collapsed. A resident called police and tried to provide Mathews with first aid until medics arrived, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus emergency room at 11:42 p.m.
Mathews, also known as Christopher Stokes, was recently released from prison after serving 10 years for dealing cocaine. He was charged as part of an investigation by the Lake County drug task force, court records show.
Earlier this year, Mathews was accepted into the Lake County Community Transition Program where he was completing two years of court-ordered probation as part of his sentence, court records state. A news release from the Lake County coroner listed the county building as his address, but a spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Correction said Tuesday he was released from the program July 9 and remained on probation through Lake Superior Court.
Detectives Cpl. James Nielsen and Daryl Gordon are investigating the homicide. Anyone with information can call Nielsen at 881-4754 or Gordon at 881-7545.
