CROWN POINT -- A small fire sparked by welders working to convert former office space into the new E-911 center prompted the evacuation of the A building at the Lake County Government Center just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Lake County Commissioners President Michael Repay, D-Hammond, said contractors were welding reinforcements to the floor of the area that will house the E-911 dispatch center Monday night. Employees early Tuesday began to report a suspicious smell coming through the building’s ventilation system.
Workers then found a small fire in the area, which is secured and off limits to employees.
Workers and contractors were cleaning the smoke damage Tuesday and airing out the ventilation system. Repay said the building would reopoen Wednesday as usual. The drainage board and commissioners’ meetings will go on as scheduled, he said.
