CALUMET TOWNSHIP — Officials placed Longfellow Elementary School on lockdown briefly Wednesday morning while police searched for a suspect who fled from them as they attempted to serve a warrant.

Lake County warrant division officers were in the 1400 block of East Elm Street about 11:20 a.m. to arrest Michael L. Maldonado, 21, of East Chicago, who failed to appear in Lake Superior Court on charges of battery, theft and battery resulting on bodily injury, spokeswoman Patti VanTil said.

Maldonado ran from police, who called for a helicopter to assist in the search. Police asked Longfellow school officials to secure the school during the search.

Griffith police officer Tony Hemphill arrested Maldonado about 1 p.m. near 45th Avenue and Ralston Street, VanTil said. Maldonado is being held at the Lake County Jail.
